Family Garden

My clients had a young family and they wanted to create a garden that could be enjoyed by the whole family, and that would grow with them as their children grew older.

The garden before was dominated by children’s play equipment and limited planting. My clients loved colour and wanted to inject this vibrancy in the garden.

In my design I have maintained parking at the front of the house but the side entrance has now been transformed into a little oasis. Pleached trees provide privacy from neighbours and a new seating area set back into the border not only provides a beautiful entrance, but a quiet place to sit and reflect.

The children’s trampoline has been sunken into the ground, and located within easy viewing from the kitchen. The addition of a living teepee, stepping logs and wild flower meadow have created a wonderful natural playground, perfect for wildlife spotting.

I added raised vegetable beds for the children to experiment with ‘growing your own’ and a new outdoor studio has been created in the garden. This has provided a truly multi-functional outdoor space providing a perfect spot to work from home or support the children with their homework.

The newly extended terrace leads on from the family kitchen-diner and has created a more comfortable space to sit and relax. Inset planting softens the hard landscaping perfectly and vibrant planting compliments the pops of colour used through the interior décor.

I have maximised the view from the terrace by creating new focal point in the garden, the circular dining space. This space is surrounded by planting and the architectural nature of Verbena bonariensis creates a sense of privacy without detracting from the space. The hedging has been shaped and the pergola provides much needed shelter alongside providing the perfect picture frame of the rolling countryside views.

The new trees and generous planting has created privacy from the neighbours to provide a space where the family can relax, play and entertain.
